The mission rolled
Annihilation (crap!)
Deployment
Dawn of war (awesome)

Here is how it went. (again from memory so some of the movements are fuzzy)
Dark Eldar took the south board edge. The terrain in vassel is limited so doesn't correspond to the actual terrain so bear with me.
Wyches with a raider and Homunculus deploy behind the central building. GK deploy a terminator squad combat squaded and the Librarian in the northern buildings. The Dark Eldar roll for their combat drugs and get re-roll all failed to wound rolls. The Dark eldar jet bikes and one squad of terminators are held in reserve.

LETS GET IT ON!!!!

Turn 1 The DE start with a hard push on the western flank, bringing in all remaining troop squads and both disintigrator Ravagers. The Wyches that started on the board jump over the ruins in front of them and deploy from the raider. The Homunculus pulls a devious looking device from his pocket and tosses it on the ground. Instantly a swirling portal to the webway materializes next to him.
The ravagers fire a full salvo into the building in midfield. Only one can see the target and 2 terminators fall, their armor and flesh stripped from their rib cages. The Ravager on the other flank sees movement in the eastern building and fires beams of dark light into the three story building rewarded by the silhouette of a terminator disappearing into the shadows.
Trying to capitalise on the firepower being displayed the Wyches try to launch into close combat with the terminators in midfield but they can not seem to cover the distance.

The Grey Knights call forward their reinforcements, Three of their venerable brothers and all armor rolls onto the field. Seeing where the fight is going to be fiercest the armor rolls onto the western flank, the Chimera using its smoke launchers and its mass to cover the razorbacks. The Dark Eldar must have been using some xenos shielding technology because only one raider was able to bee seen in the dawn haze. Leveling all cannons they fired full auto from the razorbacks and after the muzzle flash faded the raider crew was stunned and the gunner laid dead slumped over the hull.

The Dark Eldar seeing their opportunity to unleash massive volleys of fire push forward slowly on the western flank so their passengers can fire to full effect. Both wych squads move forward to feel the enemies life blood pumping into their hands and the Duke squad realising that their transport has been disabled get out and start moving toward the pile of barrels in the center field.
The disintigrator armed ravagers fire a full broadside into the chimera. shaking the crew and blowing off its multi laser. The ravagers moving up fire into the chimera as well, shaking the crew further and rendering the heavy flamer useless. Finally it came down to the blaster in the Dukes squad to snake a shot under the wyches raider to finally finish the beast off. (on a side note I have the worst luck imaginable with my damn dark light weapons, I never seem to roll more than a 2 on the damage chart when i need to, forcing me to drive all my weapons into a single transport to drop it.....)
On the eastern flank dark lances and disintigrators fire into the building holding the terminators but not finding a single target.
The wyches now seeing the squishy contents fall from the chimera go in for the assault, only to have half the squad convulse and fall to the ground bleeding from their ears. (ok sanctuary= suck with my die rolls. I rolled 5 1s on the dangerous terrain check) The remaining squad members plowed into Cortez's squad and most of their blows rang off of the 2 storm shields in the front. The Henchmen struck back killing 1 wych and stood firm in the face of the enemy.
In the center the wyches finally got to grips with the terminator squad wrapping them in the shardnet they were able to eventually drag them down.

The Grey Knights called in their last reserves and the terminator squad held in waiting dropped into the battle. Landing in bad terrain didn't slow them a bit and they raised their guns to kill as many of the foul xenos as possible.
The dreadnoughts rumbled forward into terrain and locked their legs into firing position.
The crescendo of fire erupted on the west flank wrecking 2 raiders a ravager and blowing the weapons off of the last remaining transport.
The squad to the south fired on the Duke's squad dropping a couple unlucky dark eldar that had not made it to cover yet and the eastern flank fired ineffectually into the skimmers threatening them.

The jetbikes waiting in the webway finally tore into real space on the eastern flank and immediately found their target, the lone dreadnought lumbering behind the building in the north. Warriors from the still functioning raider piled out and racked their splinter rifles and in the east the skimmers adjusted to best use their limited cover available.
The warriors opened up on the terminator squad that had wrecked their transports. With 30 warriors firing nothing could stand up to that fusillade of fire. After their clips ran dry only 2 of the terminators were laying on the ground. (3 blasters and 27 splinter rifles. over 30 wounds and he only failed 2 saves *facepalm*) Deciding that they needed to redeploy the terminators started falling back under the weight of fire from the warriors.
The jet bikes fired 3 beams of super heated gas into their target and the dreadnought simply ceased to be. (you cant shake them so you better just blow them up, and there is no arguing when a melta weapon rolls a 6 on the chart)
The wyches in the east consolidated into the ruins and what became known as the "big slap fight" in the west continued with minimal losses on each side.

Sensing that his brothers were in danger the Librarian tried to summon them to him. He mustered his psychic might and called to them through the warp. When they failed to arrive he knew something terrible had befallen them. (the deep struck right on top of the bikes and rolled a 1 on the mishap chart) Saddened at the loss he directed his squad to fire on the jetbikes that had appeared in front of them. The riders fell from their mounts leaving 2 behind which panicked and started falling back never to return. In the west the razorbacks pumped a volley of .50 caliber rounds into the raider that had survived their last volley destroying it utterly and taking a few of the dark kin in the blast. The dreadnoughts in the building in the east fired at both ravagers rendering one immobile and both non operational for the next few moments.
The squad in the rear fired at the Duke's squad again but seeing the deaths of their friends  were able to find suitable cover.
(The holy dreadnoughts in the ruble with the emperor's light upon them)

The Duke's squad decided that it needed to get back into the fight and pulled itself out of cover and started advancing to the north. The warrior squads untangled themselves from the wreckage of their transports and started advancing north as well toward the two razorbacks. The operational raider in the east pulled back to get shots into the terminators in the south and the wyches in the center also started moving toward them.

Every dark light weapon in the west fired at the razorback on the end, and once again it came down to the Duke's personal blaster man to destroy the tank. The resulting explosion killed all but 2 of the occupants. The fire from the raider in the south killed off one of the terminators and the wyches charged in killing one with splinter pistols and killing the last in close combat as it was wrapped in the shardnet. The slap fight in the west ended a few moments before and the squad had been reduced to the hekatrix and the Homunculus charged into the survivor if the exploding razorback causing no damage.

The Grey Knights retaliated knowing the end was near by destroying all the skimmers they could see. The only one escaping their wrath was hiding weaponless behind the building in the north west.
The Hekatrix killed the lone survivor of the razorback and both sides sensing victory pushed on for a few moments more.

The Homunculus high on the suffering of his foes almost ignored the large caliber round that tore itself through his abdomen but the shot ripped him in half. The Warriors fired everything they had at the last remaining razorback but the machine seemed blessed by other worldly powers and remained operational through the barrage.

Seeing the folly of his plan the Duke decided to pull his forces back from the front and finally the morning fell silent as the grey Knights voxed back to command all dark eldar advances halted in this sector.

final score
Grey Knights: 11
Dark Eldar: 8

VICTORY FOR THE IMPERIUM!!!

After action report
Dark Eldar: DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!! So close so many times! I'm gonna have to have a talk with the engineers who charged the dark light weapons today. The only one that seemed to work was in the Duke's squad.
Seriously though the new Grey Knights seem to be a resilient foe who's heavy armor coupled with the psychic powers make for a fun opponent. There are a few things I would have done differently, like zipping arund more and got into the razorbacks flanks faster. Or not have held the jetbikes in reserve only to get gunned down. I cant wait until the Venom is released so I can drop them and bring some true born squads.
It looked good until around turn 4 when my luck with saves ran out and all the skimmers popped *shrug* whatcha gonna do?*
Good game Jamie and I'm looking forward to a rematch

Grey Knights: (Jamie didn't write an after action report for me so I'm gonna make one up for him, its my blog I'll do what I want!) The Dark eldar came on like a wave of hot death from turn 1. I'm just glad that the Imperium suplied me with the armor and the faith to carry the day. Oh and that Fitz forgot to use the crucible the entire game.

So there you have it folks the first edition of "Saturday Beat Downs" from the Scenic route. I want to thank the guys at 2D10 games in Ft. Myers Florida for putting up with us every week and our high energy gaming. (and potty mouths) this is going to be a regular thing now I think bi-weekly. There will be new armies every week (hopefully) so look forward to many more (extremely) long battle reports from the front!

Oh and the rest of the pictures shot during the game. Thanks jamie for thaking them.
The dark eldar advance
clever palcement of the WWP right in the open....
after the chimera blew up
my view of the action
the holiest of holy dreadnoughts

"what do you mean we have to walk?"
"RUN AWAY!!!"
trying to block (yeah right) the razorbacks, and my crotch
I think this is when I realised I made a mistake, "oh well Im commited now, CHARGE!)

1 comment:

  1. It was a damn good fight and very fun!

    As for my after action:

The Dark Eldar were really in for a tough fight as the scenario was Annihilation. They bought a bit of luck though when deployment was dawn of war as they dodged a round of shooting.

After the pointy ears got some light on them though the riflemen with psybolt ammo really went to town. Dan was saving very well for two turns and managing to kill off a large number of my terminators.

Then towards the 4th turn skimmiers started to crumple and then the dark eldar were left with no rides and few targets on the west flank.

Dan played an excellent game against an unknown foe in a tough situation. In general, elite armies have an advantage in annhilation scenarios and the DE had the short end of the stick in this one.

    Thumbs up to:
    Psiflemen Dreadnoughts (Psybolt ammo, TLAC)
    Libby & Shrouding

Note to Self: Get moar servoskulz

I look forward to the next one Dan!
