What has happened to my wargame?!

Grey Knights have broken 40k

That get your attention? You think I'm crazy? Think I'm being a little to "out there"?

Well my friends 40k as we know it has come to a screeching halt. I went to my FLGS today for a tournament that never happened because we didn't have enough people to fill all the slots required, so we decided to just play some pick up games. The Grey Knights preview codex was behind the counter and some of us decided to make lists and test them out.

The first list

GK commander

2x20 terminators
2 psycannons
all have halberds

3x dread knights
teleporter

storm raven

The outcome of this game against my tournament tooled Dark Eldar. I was tabled turn 4. The game took 45 mins.

There was another game in the corner with a henchmen based list. The opponent was deamons. I think i saw him run out of the store crying.

So how bad could this book be I asked myself. I sat down with it and gave it a once over. Hmm henchmen don't take up a FOC huh. And Cotez makes them troops. So unlimited scoring units?

I hammered this out in about 20 minutes after finding a ridiculous unit and spamming it over and over and over.

Cortez 100

2x GKSS 180 360 total
Razorback
twin assault cannons
psybolt ammo

15x 3 henchmen 97 1455 total
razorback
twin assault cannon
psybolt ammo

1915 pts

this leaves me with 85 points to spend on other random crap

Inquisitor with 3 servo skulls to screw with your deep striking?
psycannos with the GKSS just in case I have to get out?
hell maybe Ill switch some weapons out on the razors so I can fit in another squad...
Oh I know Ill outfit 8 henchmen with plasma guns to hop out when your terminators get close.

No flash, no interesting maneuvering, NO FUN. The point is though, this army is nigh unstoppable. There is no army I know of that can take 68 s7 rending shots a turn while trying to destroy 17 rhino chassis. This army will deploy a lead curtain 24" from its deployment zone and roll forward every turn. Oh and every vehicle is scoring.

We have 1 guy that says he can beat it with space wolves. So this week I am dedicating time to assembling 17 cardboard boxes to proxy the army. Next week he will see the folly of standing against the grey knights.

  1. Troops choices. He says '...are Troops choices in an army that includes Inquisitor Torquemada Coteaz' not 'claim adjectives as if they were Troops' like the Grand Master says. There is a key, crucial difference in what is being said here.

The Grand Master gives an additional ability. Coteaz, however, changes their slot. Lord of Formosa does not say "counts as troops", he says "are troops". Which means they are added to your troop selections, and are locked to the other restrictions of troops.

But what about "This unit does not use a force organization slot"? Well, normally, when they count as elite choices, they don't. Coteaz changes that, though, as he makes them troops. They aren't elite anymore, and now they must follow the normal rules as troops.

This also means that Henchmen units with Coteaz in the army are limited to 6 units, total, even if you have a second inquisitor. The second inquisitors henchmen still count as troops, as Coteaz overrules them with the 'army that includes' wording.

  3. So corteaz says that they can be taken as a troops choice. The entry in the henchman section says "This unit does not use up a force organization slot." So yes if you take him they are troops and only troops you can longer bring them as elites. Corteaz's ability doesn't remove their rule that they do not take up a force organization slot.
